On 8 March 2014, an international passenger flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew disappeared from radar on a routine flight from Malaysia to China. Since then the search for flight MH370 has become the most expensive search in the history of aviation.
In response to the ISTD brief on ‘Mapping the World’ I have explored the various maps that were developed in an attempt to piece together the mystery of the missing plane.
This book is a documentation of the attempts to map the disappearance and flight path of flight MH370 and the following search efforts. It tells a linear story of the aircraft's travels and how it was tracked using military radar and sky, sea and underwater searches for the missing plane.
The red and blue colours are pulled from Malaysia Airlines branding. I deepened the blue to represent the depth of the ocean and vastness of the night sky, adding to the mystery element of this publication.
Graphical elements such as the flight radar grid, flight path lines and blurred text have also been used to reinforce the mapping, disappearance and mystery elements.
The publication uses tracing paper to represent multi-layered and complex maps and information. It is hand bound with red thread, left long to represent the 'loose threads' of the open ended mystery.
This book also features infographics, diagrams, statistics and quotes as well as a manifest of every passenger and crew member onboard the aircraft.
